An amazing day for Multnomah County Dems

Multnomah County Democrats literally swept the board. Every one of our candidates won in-county, including our "favorite son" challengers, Nick Kahl and Greg Matthews. Our votes helped Suzanne Van Orman and Brent Barton win cross-county victories. We provided Kate Brown and Ben Westlund with a huge part of their victories for Secretary of State and Treasurer. Mult Co voters were nearly half of the margin that separated Measures 57 and 61; we led the state in crushing most of the other terrible Mannix-Sizemore measures (and our legislators can hopefully help repair any damage M64 is likely to cause).

We said "Yes we do" to President-elect (!) Barack Obama.

And we're saying "Not so fast..." to (?)lame-duck Senator Smith. As of 10am Wednesday morning, half the county's ballots remain to be counted — and the split for Jeff Merkley so far has been 66-30. This bodes well for Speaker Merkley, although a recount seems probable.

So now we've won, and we've won very big. We will continue to celebrate an historic victory for a long time, but the best celebration will be to take this energy and hope and translate it into the change our candidates spoke of this past year. We have our super-majority in the House, control of Oregon government, and the support of Oregon voters. Let's work with those we put into office to undo the damage inflicted on Oregon over the past few decades. Join us in this great effort by becoming an active party member.
