Oregon's Chief Justice, Wallace Carson, Jr., (a Republican) resigned in such a way to prevent the Governor from appointing a replacement. No doubt, the Republican Right will not overlook this opportunity, and this will likely be a hotly contested election. Conservative strategists want to name public places for Republicans to help promote their agenda. The Reagan Legacy Project has been quite successful. (www.reaganlegacy.org). In 2001, Representative Starr sponsored HB 3275, to name an Oregon state building in honor of Reagan. Of course, a Democratic Governor would not permit that. In 2005, Senator Starr apparently has achieved what he can, naming a portion of our busy Airport after Governor Vic Atiyeh. He sugar-coated his effort by naming a building after the most-deserving Governor Barbara Roberts, a building that sees nowhere near the public traffic.
